| Phaedon.
A Greek philosopher who was a native of Elis, and of high birth. He was
taken prisoner in his youth during the war between Sparta
and Elis (B.C. 401, 400) and passed into the hands of an Athenian slave
dealer; and being of considerable personal
beauty was compelled to prostitute himself. He became an acquaintance of
Socrates. Phaedon ran away from his master to Socrates and was ransomed
by one of the friends of the latter. Phaedon was present at the death of
Socrates. That Phaedon was on terms of friendship with Plato appears likely
from the mode in which he is introduced in the dialogue which
takes its name from him (
Plato's Phaedo ). In the philosophy set forth in the Phaedo, Socrates
discusses the nature of afterlife. One of the main themes in the Phaedo
is the idea that the soul is immortal. Phaedon
eventually returned to Elis, where he became the founder of a school of
philosophy. |
